Photo-graphics of Pathankot
Pathankot
is a town situated in northern Punjab in India, yet, the society, and the way of life in
Pathankot is very much influenced by Himachal and Jammu and Kashmir as these two states
are immediate neighbours.
The social values of this place are utilitarian and commercial profit oriented. The
concept of the preservation of heritage has little place in that. In this situation it is
not possible to hope that people here would preserve the beautiful but decaying old
architecture for the sake of art and history.
Although I have published a colourful book on Pathankot, printed a serigraphic portfolio
and posters on this town, I dont expect to change the mindset prevailing here.
I with Arup Chandra made a documentary on this area too, but that also for our own
pleasure.
The dazzle and lure of western lifestyle is filling the emotional vacuam of the place
where everything seems to be measured in terms of profit and loss.
I infer, that the changing social values of the new generation in Pathankot will push the
tradition to the realm of oblivion and most people here will not even feel the loss of
their own heritage.
From the general trend now, I infer that Pathankot in future will change to a town of
general character of peripheral values that has little or no anchorage to its own past.
There are sensitive individuals living in this town but due to the lack of co-ordination
no comprehensive effort for the preservation of heritage can be made. Still, there are
certain decaying relics of older times that were a part of this towns individuality.
This portfolio of photo-graphics by Arup Chandra captures the essence of that fleeting
individuality.
